Tom VanDeWalle on Thursday, February 21, 2008.
A Tribute to Tom
A Volunteer, a person who who devotes oneself to help or work without expecting to be compensated or rewarded, that was Tom! He was a dedicated, committed volunteer who has inspired countless people in this community over the years. Tom attained a Town Board meeting the night before he suffered his stroke, how fitting to depart doing what he did best. Tom was compassionate, professional, yet held his composure no matter what the situation. These are things that can't be taught in a classroom, I take great pride in knowing I've been taught by the best serving with Tom for 23 years. I have gotten close to Tom on a personal level 17 years ago when Randi stopped breathing. I was doing mouth-to-mouth while on the phone with 911, my baby is turning blue. Desperate and exhausted, those minutes felt like hours, only to look up to see Tom reaching out his arms to continue breathing for Randi until the ambulance arrived. He wrapped his comforting arms around me and tole me everything will be okay. Today, I stand before you celebrating Tom's life with a heavy heart, I will miss those comforting hugs1 Thank you Barb, Ed, Brian and Kelly for sharing your husband, your dad.
Tom, rest in peace! You were a great mentor, dear friend we celebrate your life as one with many accomplishments. Thank you for touching all of us and giving me the joy of knowing you as my mentor, dear friend - my HERO!
